Why Congress is in a fix over ‘language war’ row between Tamil Nadu, Centre
The “language war” row between DMK-ruled Tamil Nadu and the Centre presents the Congress with the challenge of navigating a difficult political issue. With the second half of the Budget session of Parliament due to begin on March 10, one thing to watch out for will be how the INDIA bloc of Opposition parties deal with the issue and if they will be on the same page given that most of them will have to keep in mind their vote bases in the Hindi heartland states. What is the “language war” row? The controversy erupted after the M K Stalin-led Tamil Nadu government claimed that the Centre had withheld funds related to the Samagra Shiksha scheme due to the state’s refusal to implement the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020. Stalin and his party DMK have accused the Centre of attempting to impose Hindi through the three-language formula of the NEP.
